Payless Car Rental is budget car rental option, which operates mainly on a franchising system. It is owned in part by the Avid Budget Group and has operations across North and South America, the Caribbean as well as Europe in upto 167 locations worldwide.

Payless Car Rental was founded in 1971 by John Les Netterstron. He opened the first operation in Spokane, Washington. The company is in continuous expansion and looking to hold more corporate holdings rather than franchises.  To date, the company has over a hundred locations, located in over 20 countries and has a fleet consisting of around 10,000 vehicles.

Payless Car Rental’s fleet descriptions are very simple. They describe to you exactly what the car is and what it can do for you. It has an Economy fleet, which is composed of their Hyundai Accents. Their Compact line gives you the chance to drive a Nissan Versa. The Intermediate Line stands for the Hyundai Elantra while the Standard Line gives you a Dodge Avenger. The Hyundai Sonata comes in their Full Size line while the Toyota Camry comes in their Premium fleet. They have a Luxury line too, which gives you the chance to drive a Chrysler 300. They also have a range of Vans, Sports Utility Vehicles and Convertibles in the names of the Dodge Grand Caravan, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Chrysler Sebring/Chrysler 200 respectively.  Unlike some of the other car rental companies though, Payless Car Rental does not offer a car sharing service.

The overall reviews rave about the quality of service Payless Car Rental gives. Sara from Dumfries, United States, is an avid car renter and has consistently found Payless to have the lowest prices in the market. The lines at the depot also move fast because as people flock in, they open more counters which clients are very grateful for. There have been some reviews though that say the lines are too long sometimes. These types of reviews though are generally given during the holiday season which is quite understandable from the customers’ perspective.Brett from the US said that the airport shuttle was extremely easy to find and it took him about 5 minutes to get his rental car. Bruce from San Jose saved $300 on a two-week rental of a minivan. He said this exactly: “I saved $300 on a two week rental of a minivan. The car was in great condition and I returned it a day early and they reduced the charges. Be patient if you have to wait in line for service. This is a great value. Thanks Payless, you are great. Thank you. Keep up the hard work of competing with the big guys.”

Bruce’s last statement in his review rings true. Payless may be one of the youngest but it is already playing against the big leagues which makes them quite a promising venture. As more and more people rely oncar rentals for their mobility needs, these smaller companies will surely be able to up their games and compete with even bigger players in the market.
